Coaching Philosophy

Ashoka is a serious proponent of functional training. He takes his experience from working with athletes, youth, and the general population to create individualized programming designed to progress clients towards accomplishing their goals in a safe, challenging, and effective manner. It is his belief that a client-specific approach to training is essential, and sees the shared journey he takes with his clients as a privilege. He enjoys training people from all walks of life.

Ashoka, a native of beautiful Santa Cruz County, grew up loving the outdoors. As a kid, he took every opportunity to climb a tree or play outside with friends. In addition to his love for nature and physical activity, Ashoka found his first true passion when he was just 12 years old – his parents signed him up for Jiu-jitsu lessons at a local dojo. He has been hooked on martial arts ever since and continues to study Jiu-jitsu to this day. In an effort to become a stronger Jiu-jitsu competitor, he took up strength training and noticed immediate improvements on the mat. At that point, he became intrigued with Strength & Conditioning, and decided that he wanted to become a coach so that he could help others achieve their personal fitness goals. Coming from a big family, Ashoka is the youngest of 7 kids. Throughout his childhood, he was able to develop a sense of understanding others with compassion. Coaching was a natural fit for him. Ashoka coaches world-class athletes including Judo athlete Colton Brown (2016 Olympian) – but what really fuels his work is training the everyday 9-to-5er, working moms, student athletes, and anyone else who is committed to living a stronger and longer life.

Ashoka has worked in both the private sector and collegiate settings. In 2013 he joined the SJSU Judo team as their strength coach, helping them win 3 National Collegiate Titles from 2014 to 2016. During the summer of 2016, he interned at Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning near Boston (voted the #1 gym in the USA), and has also spent time as a volunteer with the San Jose Sharks. Ashoka currently serves a wide variety of clients and athletes throughout Northern California. It doesn’t matter whether you are a software engineer or pro mma fighter Ashoka is dedicated to helping you optimize your health, performance, and quality of life.

"I have been training with Ashoka for almost three years now. He is by far one of the most dedicated people I’ve ever met in my life. He is not only guiding me toward achieving my fitness and Judo goals, but also keeps me grounded off of the mat. He helped me increase all my major lifts, and ultimately helped me make an Olympic Team. Ashoka is passionate about training and genuinely cares about supporting his athletes in every way possible. One of the best decisions I’ve made to date has been to train with Ashoka."
